Canal, rainforest, Caribbean — without burning out. A field-tested 3-day plan from local guides.

Three days is the sweet spot for Panama. It's enough to see the Canal, walk Casco Viejo, get into the rainforest, and touch the Caribbean — without burning out or feeling like you saw it through a bus window.
This is the itinerary we actually recommend when friends ask us to plan their trip. It's been refined over hundreds of guests, accounts for real driving times and crowd patterns, and leaves room to breathe.
Day 1 — Soft landing in Panama City
Morning
Sleep in. Most international flights land late and the jet lag is real. Brunch at a Marbella or Casco café, then a slow walking introduction to Casco Viejo: Plaza Independencia, the Metropolitan Cathedral, Iglesia San José. Build the story before you tackle the Canal tomorrow.
Afternoon
Heat peaks 12–3 PM. We usually break for lunch and a beat at the hotel. Come back out at 4 PM for the seawall and a slow loop through Plaza Bolívar and Plaza de Francia. Pick up snacks and ceviche at Mercado de Mariscos.
Evening
Sunset rooftop in Casco — Tantalo, Salsipuedes, or one of the smaller spots we rotate between. Dinner at Fonda Lo Que Hay or Donde José if you booked ahead. Easy night.
Day 2 — The Canal and the rainforest
Morning
Early start (7:30 AM pickup). Drive to Gamboa, board a private boat for Monkey Island and a cruise through Lake Gatun. You'll see capuchins, howlers, sloths if you're lucky, and container ships passing in the distance.
Afternoon
Drive to Miraflores Locks for the southbound transit window (2–4 PM). Tour the museum, watch the ships descend. If you've upgraded to VIP, this is when you do the restricted-access deck.
Evening
Back in Panama City by 6 PM. Casual dinner — you'll be tired but happy. Bonus: try Pedro Mandinga for a rum flight if you've got one more push in you.
Day 3 — Caribbean day to Portobelo
Morning
8 AM pickup. Drive 1.5 hours to the Caribbean coast. First stop: the UNESCO Spanish forts at Portobelo, with the story of how this tiny town was once the gold port of the Americas.
Afternoon
Boat ride to Isla Mamey or Playa Blanca for swimming, snorkeling, and fresh fish lunch on the beach. The water here is the Caribbean you came for: clear, warm, quiet.
Evening
Slow drive back to Panama City, in your hotel by 6:30 PM. Last dinner — Mercado de Mariscos for ceviche, or somewhere nicer if you're celebrating.

FAQs about a 3-day Panama trip
Is 3 days enough for Panama?+
For Panama City, the Canal, rainforest, and a Caribbean day — yes. For Bocas del Toro or San Blas, you need at least 5.
Should I move hotels?+
No. Stay in Panama City the whole time. Day trips out and back are the most efficient pattern.
Can I do this with kids?+
Yes — this exact itinerary works well for families with kids 6+. We slow it down and add buffer time.
What if it rains?+
Even in green season, mornings are usually clear. We adjust the running order in real time if a storm rolls in.
